Educational TV Shows & Games
Screen time is the length of time a person uses electronic devices such as televisions, computers, tablets, smartphones and video games. We try to limit screen time in our household, but there are some educational TV shows & apps/games that have had a positive impact on the boys and I wanted to share them with you.
Some of Our Favourite TV Shows:

Alphablocks
Letter Factory
Super Why
Sesame Street

Here are some things to consider:
Special Interests and Focus: The boys have intense special interests or areas of expertise which is common in autistic individuals. Screen time can provide a platform to explore and learn about these interests in-depth.
Educational and Therapeutic Tools: Technology can serve as a valuable educational and therapeutic tool for autistic individuals. Various apps, interactive programs, and online resources are designed to support learning, communication, and skill development. These tools can help reinforce academic concepts, improve language and communication skills, and provide visual supports for daily routines.
Communication and Social Interaction: For individuals with autism who struggle with communication and social interaction, screens and technology can provide a platform for engagement. Apps and online communities can offer opportunities for socialization, communication practice, and connection with others who share similar interests. Regardless, it’s important to monitor these apps and forums closely as a parent.
Overstimulation and Sensory Concerns: Some autistic individuals may be more sensitive to sensory stimuli, including those generated by screens. Bright lights, loud sounds, and fast-paced visual content can be overwhelming and lead to sensory overload or increased anxiety. It's important to consider individual sensory needs and adjust screen settings or use visual supports, such as colour filters, screen overlays and closed captions, if necessary.
Balancing Screen Time: It's crucial to find a balance between screen time and other activities for autistic children, just as it is for the general population. Engaging in a variety of activities, including physical exercise, social interactions, outdoor play, and hands-on experiences, is essential for overall well-being and development.
